Hi everyone!

Tuesday December 8, 2009

Hope you have been well since my last entry! Yeah I know that it's been a while. had a lot going on here at this end. I made a lot of changes, moved to the country where I hope to get some great shots this winter. I'm right beside a bunch of trees where i will be setting up some feeders. of course being in the country I lose some opportunities to play on the net and do updates. I am working on that right now as I am writing this entry. If all goes well the updates should be regular now so come back often. I have taken some excellent shots since September that I will post in the next couple of days

Swan week

Wednesday September 9, 2009

Hello All

I hope that your summer has been well. I know that I will be sorry to see this one go as I Have immensely enjoyed this summer!

You have possibly noticed that I have almost exclusively had water fowl on this site. I really don’t have a bias towards these wonderful creatures, it’s just that I have been doing a lot of fishing this year and have been taking along my camera.

It just so happens that this time it is also a water bird. I was exploring with my son while at Father/Son camp. We were driving on a lakeside road that curved around small marshes and beachfront cottages. As we rounded one of these corners, we spotted them feeding. Of  course, if you spot something like that you have to stop and get as close as you can and have a peek. It looks to me like one is just a young one and momma was teaching. Papa was a nice distance away and was watching me just as intently as I was watching them. I think one false move and I would have been running for cover. Because I don’t anyone who has ever been chased down by a swan, it is pure speculation on my part and I do not want to be known as the first one. ( I have been chased down and bitten in the back by a duck after I “helped” a duckling that was falling behind. But that is a different story!)

Then later in the week while enjoying some time with the kids before they go back to school, they spotted some more swans at a pond close to the hotel where we were staying! Since this week we had a “large” number of sightings I am dedicating this post as Swan week!

It is getting close to migrating season and the Canada geese and monarchs are starting to gather for the trip south. I have seen a lot of V shaped flocks flying over the house now. I will do a future posting and will go and photograph that as well. I know that this is a birding site but if I catch the migration of the monarchs then I will probably add a few pictures of that as well. Don't forget to view the gallery for more pictures!!

Boat ride out

Sunday August 23, 2009

Went for a boat ride, well not exactly a boat ride, Ok, I went fishing but I took my camera along. Technically, as we go out of the canal, we are going for a boat ride. Any who as we were approaching the open lake there was a small yellow bird that was flying from tree to tree, almost daring me to take a photograph . I got the camera out and was trying my best to focus. However, a big lens and a moving boat could not be made to co-operate with the lens being at full zoom. The pictures were not all that great.  At first I wasn’t going to put up these pictures, but you know what, I am not a professional photographer and don’t claim to be. What I am is an excitable bird watcher among other things. So I will put them in the gallery.

Then I saw our fishing competition. Some herons were walking in the shallow water. As we came closer they took to flight and I captured some more decent shots. I was still on a moving boat ( Captain John had fishing on the brain J ) but managed to focus on a couple of them.  Talk about a wingspan. These creatures must workout because those massive wings must take a lot o muscle to get and stay airborne. Of course they make it look almost effortless. Maybe they are the suv’s of the bird world, I can just see it now. Here are the seagulls watching with envy and jealousy, gossiping about the low perch mileage they must get. “Bet there isn’t a single fishing hole they can pass by without filling up”

They were fun to watch while it lasted and soon our captain gave the boat some gas and we were on our way.

Afterwards; on our way in the herons were gone but birds had returned only now some seagulls had claimed a log as their own. It looked to me as if they were spaced evenly so the log looked completely occupied. This way no one else could sit on the log.

Once again I was happy that the camera had come along. Until next time have fun birding

Loch Ness Monster?

Monday August 10, 2009

I was walking along the marina, watching the local ducks as they where lazily trying to cool off in the heat of the afternoon. Even the sea gulls were panting like chickens as the heat of the day was at it's worst. I looked out towards the lake and saw what appeared at first to be the Loch Ness Monster! Only on  a very small scale of course. But as I looked closer at the almost submerged body followed by the curved neck and head it was strange looking bird. Dare I say ugly? Well maybe not ugly as ugly goes. then it swam closer and started to show off for my camera. some nice neck bobs, a few dives then as if to gain my attention and to prove she was actually a looker, she stood on the rocks and displayed all the grandeur and regalness she could. Ok I'm convinced my first impression wasn't to good but in the end I liked what I had discovered.

Someone on the bench asked me what kind of ducks they were. I said "I'm not watching the ducks I'm taking pictures of the loon". My kids and I agreed that it looked like the bird on a loonie. (1 dollar Canadian coin) She quickly corrected me "It's not a loon it's a Cormorant"  Some people have no sense of humour so I just smiled and said "You know, You are absolutley correct and a very pretty one at that"

I took a few snaps of the Cormorant. Go see them in the gallery! see ya soon.

Interesting bird!

Thursday August 6, 2009

Today as I was coming in from the lake after a morning of less than average day of fishing, the quite boat ride in got quite exciting as a medium sized bird coasted by taking a good close look at me! It was a new bird to me so I quickly reached for my camera but too late! It flapped it’s wings and by doing so, quickly flew over the cattails of the Bay. It had piqued my interest to find out what I had just seen! My birding guide was soon opened and I was poring over what species I had just witnessed. By the pictures that I saw in my guide I still wasn’t sure what it was so I brought the boat a round and tried to get as close to the cattails as I could. The bird reemerged and was soon gliding across the water. I got a better look at it and this time and noticed a distinct red neck and white with black on it’s head. I watched intently as it gracefully executed a swift climb over some marsh grass and disappeared again. Ok back to info digging and soon came up with what I thought must be a Red-necked Grebe! Okay but there are 7 different kinds and the one that I saw according to the map should not be in this area so I cannot rule that this is what I saw! So Now I am going to be going back in hopes that I can spot it again and rule on it either way. I can however say that it was a beautiful sighting that I would have loved to have photographed.

Good Morning all

Monday July 27, 2009

Today I bring you an interesting story of a small yellow critter that had fallen in love with one of it’s own. My friends found a pile of bird droppings on the mirror of their van everyday! They wanted to find out what was going on. They started to watch the van often and soon found a small yellow bird that would stand on the rear-view mirror then dart where it could see itself and proceed to do a song and dance, march back and forth for a while then jump back on top of the mirror and start all over again. Of course they know about this site and knew that it would be of interest to my readers! Now they have described it as a small yellow bird with a little bit of black on its head. To me it sounds like an American Goldfinch but I will have to go and see if I can capture it in a picture so I can log it in for sure!
